How to Care for Faux Fur Hats & Earmuffs
Faux fur needs gentle care to stay soft, fluffy, and looking fresh. Follow these simple steps to keep your hats and earmuffs in top condition.
Cleaning Faux Fur
Spot Cleaning (For Light Dirt)
- Mix a small amount of mild detergent (like Woolite or baby shampoo) with cold water.
- Dampen a soft cloth or sponge with the soapy water and gently dab the dirty areas.
- Wipe with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
Hand Washing (If Needed)
- Fill a sink with cold water and add a small amount of mild detergent.
- Submerge the item and gently swish it around—avoid rubbing or wringing.
- Rinse thoroughly in cold water to remove all soap.
Drying
- Never use heat! Lay the item flat on a clean towel and gently press out excess water.
- Reshape and let it air dry naturally, away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
- Once dry, fluff up the fur using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
Maintaining Softness & Fluff
- Use a soft-bristle brush or wide-tooth comb to detangle and restore fluff.
- Lightly mist with water if the fur looks crushed.
- Store in a cool, dry place—avoid plastic bags, as they can trap moisture and cause matting.
Deodorizing Faux Fur
Baking Soda Method
- Sprinkle baking soda lightly over the fur and let it sit for 15–30 minutes.
- Shake it off and brush out any residue.
Fabric Freshener Spray
- Use an alcohol-free fabric freshener or a DIY mix of equal parts water and white vinegar.
- Lightly mist the fur and let it air dry.
Air It Out
- If it smells musty, place it in a well-ventilated area for a day.
Removing Stains
Oily or Greasy Stains
- Sprinkle cornstarch or baby powder over the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes.
- Brush it off and spot clean with mild detergent if needed.
Makeup or Dirt Stains
- Mix mild soap with cold water and dab the stain with a soft cloth.
- Avoid scrubbing! Rinse gently with a damp cloth.
Wine, Coffee, or Food Stains
- Blot immediately with a dry paper towel to absorb excess liquid.
- Use a mix of water and white vinegar (1:1) to gently dab the stain.
- Let it air dry and fluff afterward.
Storage Tips
Keep in a Cool, Dry Place
- Avoid humid areas to prevent mold and mildew.
- Store away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and drying.
Use a Breathable Storage Bag
- Skip plastic bags—they trap moisture and cause matting.
- Use a cotton garment bag or pillowcase to protect from dust while allowing airflow.
Maintain Shape
- Stuff hats with tissue paper to help them keep their form.
- Hang earmuffs on a hook or store in a padded box.
Fluff Before Wearing
- Shake out and gently brush if the fur looks flat.
- A blow dryer on a cool setting can help revive fluff.
